ABOUT NEW BEGINNINGS
In the summer of 1990, H. Evan Smith was directed by the Lord to begin a ministry in Forestville, Maryland. As a native of Baltimore, Maryland, Bishop Smith had no idea the Lord would lead him to an unfamiliar frontier where he knew neither friend nor foe.
Before the church’s official opening, Bishop Smith conducted all-night prayer meetings in his home every Friday night. The Lord gave Bishop Smith the name Agape Assembly for unconditional love and the church motto: The church where godly love is expressed and we are kingdom minded “touching the world”. Agape Assembly was built on prayer, the word of God, and love. Bishop’s Smith first congregation consisted of his wife and family. Bishop Smith continued to preach and teach the message of love, forgiveness, and salvation to his family until the Lord began to send laborers into the ministry.
The Lord instructed Bishop Smith to conduct a street service during the opening weekend. This street service was held in the parking lot of an abandon building formerly Safeway grocery store located at the corner of Walters Lane and Hilmar Drive in Forestville, Maryland. During the service two young men gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the name of Jesus. The official service and grand opening was held on Sunday, September 30, 1990 at the Berkshire Elementary School in Forestville, Maryland. Family, friends, and many well- wishers along with future members were in attendance.
The Lord blessed Bishop Smith with wisdom and knowledge beyond his 29 years. Bishop Smith began to incorporate his ministerial and administrative skills to build the ministry. He learned a great deal during his tenure serving under the leadership of his father the late Dist. Elder Horace Smith, Sr. at the Open Door Bibleway Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Within weeks, Bishop Smith had already established an Administrative Staff, Sunday School Department, Usher Board, Technical Staff, Music Ministry and Youth group.
In 2003, the Lord led Bishop Smith to change the name of the church from Agape Assembly to The New Beginnings Ministry now consisting of various ministries to name a few - -Christian Education, The Mighty Warriors Men’s Ministry, The Women of Virtue Ministry, The Joshua Generation Youth Ministry, Davidic Timbrel & Dance Music & Arts Ministry.
Bishop Smith is also the President & Founder of the New Beginnings Community Development Corporation, which includes the following programs - - Females of Destiny, Young Men of Standard, Let’s Make It Happen Study Hall & Report Card Review, Share Food Program, Food & Clothe Bank, Computer Lab and a lot more.
Over the years, the Lord has increased the membership in quantity and quality. The ministry has grown from a membership of five to a membership of over one hundred. To God Be the Glory for the things he has done.
